2024-2025 School Safety and Digital Citizenship Responsibilities

Administration Responsibilities – Report to School Community Councils

The LEA report may include:

• What filters are being used and how do they work?

We use a Content Keeper inline filter. It uses filtering categories, and sites are categorized by Content Keeper. When iPads or student laptops are offsite, they VPN back to Content Keeper.

• Are there different settings used for different grades and school levels?

We have a different filtering profile for each school, and can move students to more restricted access within a school when needed.

• What is the district filtering policy on frequently used sites such as YouTube, Google Images, etc.?

We force Safe Search for all Google Searches, including images and YouTube videos. Google is changing access for schools to Youtube, beginning in 2025, students will no longer be able to search YouTube, but will be able to access embedded videos that have been approved by a teacher.

• Are there management systems available (MDM, Chrome management, LanSchool, etc.) that can add additional supervision and appropriately limit access?

We use Jamf as our MDM for our Apple Devices. It gives us management capabilities over those devices. We also enable Apple Classroom for our teachers to be able to add supervision and control for students. Teachers in elementary and Middle school also have access to Jamf Teacher, which gives them greater control over devices in their classrooms. We also use Bark to monitor our Google Workspace for Education.

• What resources does the district provide concerning educating students on safe internet use and digital citizenship?

We use a variety of resources, some locally obtained, and some made available from CUES, UETN, or other educational agencies.

• What is the protocol for students, employees and parents in district schools when inappropriate content is accessed?

At the principal's discretion, the student may have a range of consequences. Parents would be contacted, and a behavior plan could be implemented. The student may be moved into a stricter filtering group. In severe or repeated incidents, the student may lose access to technology.

• District capabilities to change filtering, settings and management tools based on best practices, technological limitations, and funding.

We can adjust filtering as needed. Content Keeper is paid for by UETN, and is the most manageable filter we have ever used, giving robust control of the filter. We keep up with best practices, and adjust accordingly.
